Plumbing in the capital city
Topeka is the capital of Kansas and the seat of Shawnee County, with 126,587 people at the 2020 census and about 233,000 across the five-county metro. The city was laid out in 1854 on the Kansas River and chartered in 1857, so its neighborhoods run from early twentieth-century houses near downtown to newer homes on the west and south sides. Older houses often still carry galvanized steel or cast iron; see old galvanized pipes.
Hot summers, cold winters
Topeka sits in a humid continental climate, USDA hardiness zone 6a, with hot, somewhat humid summers and cool to cold winters. Spring brings heavy storms that fill sump pits fast, and January cold snaps freeze pipes in crawl spaces and outside walls. Our sump pump check and frozen pipe repair pages cover both.
