Grantville is a census-designated place in southwestern Jefferson County with 182 people at the 2020 census. It sits on the south side of US-24, about nine miles from downtown Topeka.
What that means for your plumbing
Grantville lies in the valley of the Kansas River at an elevation of 876 feet. Low ground near the river means groundwater can rise quickly after heavy rain, so basements here depend on working sump pumps and good drainage away from the house. See sump pumps.
Named for a general
Grantville was named in 1866 for Ulysses S. Grant, who later became the 18th President. Its post office opened the same year. The community is spread out along the highway and country roads, with homes on larger lots than in town. Many have long buried service lines and outbuildings with water, and wells with pressure tanks are common on the rural edges, all of which need checking before winter sets in.
Between Topeka and Perry
US-24 runs along the community's northern edge, leading east about nine miles to Perry and west about five miles to north Topeka. The area mixes houses on country lots with farmland, and some homes rely on wells and septic. Well pumps and pressure tanks wear out, and a pump that cycles on and off often can mean a leak or a failing tank. If water pressure changes or the pump runs constantly, see leak detection.
