Sump Pump Check Before Topeka's Storm Season
Spring thunderstorms in northeast Kansas can drop a lot of rain fast. The best time to find out your sump pump doesn't work is a dry afternoon in March.
Request a plumberFind the pump
The sump pit is usually in a corner of the basement floor, covered by a lid. The pump sits inside, with a pipe leading up and out through the wall. Make sure the pump's cord is plugged into a working outlet, ideally one that isn't shared with other appliances.
Do the bucket test
Slowly pour a bucket of water into the pit. The float should rise and switch the pump on, the water should drain quickly, and the pump should shut off when the pit is nearly empty. If nothing happens, check the outlet and breaker before anything else.
Look for warning signs
A pump that hums but doesn't move water, a float that catches on the pit wall, rust or a burning smell, or water that runs back into the pit after the pump stops. That last one usually means the check valve on the discharge pipe has failed.
Check outside
Follow the discharge line to where it empties. It should drain well away from the foundation and slope away from the house. A line that ends right next to the wall just sends water back into the pit.
Think about backup
If the basement is finished, a battery backup pump keeps water out when a storm cuts power. Test it the same way, and replace the battery on the schedule its maker gives.
When to get a plumber
If the pump is old, noisy, or ran nonstop during the last storm, have it checked before the season starts. See sump pump repair and installation.
