Frozen & Burst Pipe Repair in Topeka, KS

A January night well below zero can freeze pipes in crawl spaces, garages and outside walls. If the taps go quiet, act before the ice splits the line.

Signs a pipe has frozen

A tap that gives only a trickle or nothing at all, frost on an exposed pipe, a toilet that won't refill, or a bulge in a copper or plastic line. If only one fixture is affected, the frozen section is usually in the wall behind it or in the space below the floor.

Thaw it safely

Open the tap the pipe feeds so melting water can run out. Warm the pipe slowly with a hair dryer, a space heater kept well clear of anything that burns, or warm towels. Never use a torch or open flame: it can start a fire inside a wall or overheat a joint until it fails.

Where Topeka pipes freeze

Crawl spaces with open vents, pipes along outside walls of older homes, kitchen sinks on exterior walls, garages, and hose bibs that were never drained. Houses that have been added on to over the years often hide a run of pipe in an unheated corner nobody remembers.

When it bursts

A split pipe often doesn't leak until it thaws, so keep checking for several hours after the water starts moving again. If you see or hear water, close the main shut-off straight away and open a low tap to drain the line.

The repair

The plumber cuts out the damaged section and replaces it, then looks for the cause: missing insulation, an open vent, a draft through the rim joist. Repeated freezes in the same spot may mean rerouting the pipe inside the heated part of the house.

Preventing the next one

Insulate exposed pipe, close crawl space vents for the winter, seal drafts where pipes pass through walls, and let a tap on an outside wall drip on the coldest nights. Frost-free sillcocks prevent the most common outdoor split.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a frozen pipe take to thaw?
With gentle heat, often under an hour if the frozen section is reachable. Pipes inside walls or under floors take longer, and a plumber may need to open access.
Will insurance cover a burst pipe?
Many policies cover sudden water damage but not a pipe that froze because the house was left unheated. Check your policy and keep photos and the plumber's invoice.
